The Great Land Run in 1889 is where the unassigned lands were opened. This activity made it possible for the first Oklahoma settlers to acquire their lands. The Norman Day Parade and Festival was created to celebrate this wonderful event. The City of Norman will partial fund this festival while the other half will be funded by individuals and businesses. Then a group of volunteers will be organizing the events for this festival.
For this year the festival will be held on April 17 and April 18, 2009. On April 17 there will be an 89er Wagon Train Association starting from 7:00 A.M. to 10:00 P.M. at the Cleveland County Fairgrounds. For April 18, 2009 at the Downtown area of Norman Oklahoma there will be 89er Day parade. Then after the parade at 12:00 noon the Blue Grass festival will start at the Moore Lindsay Historical Museum.
Abner Norman was a 1780 young surveyor that was commissioned to survey the Oklahoma territory. Where ever his crew camped for the night they burned the sign Normans Camp on the trees. This sign was seen by the first Oklahoma settlers and when they saw this they decide to name their town after the sign.
Every April and September of the year for the last 31 years there has always been a 89'er Wagon Train Association. This 89'er Wagon Train Association is composed of The Sooner, Teamsters & Trail Riders Association that travels on horseback, muleback, wagon or buggy. They travel from one camp to another passing by the beautiful Oklahoma countryside. This would be the type of vacation you would want if you are looking for excitement, fun and a taste of adventure.
The theme for this years 89ers day parade will be Stake your ClaimMake it Green. The parade will start 10:00 A.M. on April 18, 2009. There will be no admission fee to take part of the parade. The route of the parade is Norman High School, at Main and Pickard, and goes East down Main Street to Crawford Ave. - 16890
