Part Five of the Weekly Craft Show Tips

By Rick Amorey

As a final statement to the weekly craft show articles I've been presenting, I would like to close this series off by talking about event promotion. There is nothing quite as important as this when you are setting up a booth. If you think about it, if no one promotes the event, then there will be no one around to buy the wares! Promoting the event should be done both at the venue and outside it.

Whenever a customer purchases something, I make sure to hand him or her a market flier about the event. A lot of people are sure to want to take the flier; what they do with it after is their choice, but it will still lead to them spreading the word. Try to ask your neighboring sellers to do the same with their buyers.

If you have an online shop, it is also a good idea to print the URL there as well. One other way to do this is by including it in more attractive items. What I do is have it in a promotional bookmark. The picture of my shop's banner is included in it. In addition, I ask my customers where they first heard about the show. This helps me get more ideas on how to better spread the word.

Promoting outside the event is quite necessary, but in most cases, it is not your responsibility. The organizers of the event will be the ones to inform the local media about the event. It's a big thing if the marketing manager can get the show's details on the local newspaper, magazine or on television, maybe.

However, this does not mean that the vendors themselves should be lax about promoting the event. Ask the organizers if they have fliers prepared and then spread it around in as many places as you yourself. Just don't litter! - 16890
