Old Palm Harbor Main Street Art and Craft Fair

By Sive Iver

In 1878 a post office commission under the name of Bay St. Joseph was granted this is the earliest written record of either community of Ozona and Old Palm Harbor. But this name was only used for a short time. After which Yellow Bluff replaced it but again this name did not last after a few years the name had a negative connotation with the yellow fever epidemic. That is why the name was changed again to Ozona meaning pure air.

The name Sutherland is a shortening of Southern Land and Development Company, the group which originally platted the community in 1888. It was also the same year when the railroad cam through. Sutherland boasted two beautiful hotels, the larger one becoming Southern College in 1902. It sat high on the bluff overlooking Sutherland Bayou and the Gulf of Mexico. Sutherland was thought to be named after Duke of Sutherland, who visited these parts after landing at Tarpon Springs in 1887.

The downtown area whose main street is Florida Avenue was renamed Palm Harbor on 1925. Florida Avenue flows down to the "Harbor" at Pop Stansell Park, our connection to the Gulf of Mexico. Since 1888, Palm Harbor has gone through three name changes and several "past lives" as a pioneer town, a farming center, a developer's dream, a resort town and a college town. This district is the heart of an unincorporated part of Pinellas County with nearly 100,000 residents. Historic downtown Palm Harbor, once the heart of daily community activity is stepping up to this position again.

The Old Palm Harbor Main Street, Inc. a non-profit organization, values our community heritage and those characteristics that make Old Palm Harbor a special place. The Old Palm Harbor Main Street, Inc was established in 1999 to promote the historic preservation, protection and use of the Palm Harbors Historic District, including commercial, civic and religious enterprises and residences. The historic district of Old Palm Harbor is known for its small town atmosphere and strong sense of community.
