No matter how hard you try to convince them of how much something is worth, it's not going to work. You must show them, give them tangible proof that it is indeed worthwhile. "Show Me!" is the State's motto.
In this respect, the people of Missouri are more connected to the tangible rather than the conceptual. Which isn't saying that they are not religious; these apply to everyday matters, not to spiritual well being. So it is only natural for them to be involved in crafts of various degrees.
