Missouri Show and Tell at Craft Fairs

By Rick Amorey

In Missouri, people are known for being skeptical. These people are not easily taken in by mere words. No matter how hard you try to convince them of how much something is worth, it's not going to work. You must show them, give them tangible proof that it is indeed worthwhile. "Show Me!" is the State's motto.

In this respect, the people of Missouri are more connected to the tangible rather than the conceptual. Which isn't saying that they are not religious; these apply to everyday matters, not to spiritual well being. So it is only natural for them to be involved in crafts of various degrees.

If you're from Missouri, and you have a taste for crafts making, then I wholly encourage you to do so. Strive for the intricacy of your woven or carved object to be pleasing to the eye of the people who will see it. But more importantly, the craft should be exquisite to the touch of skin; only then will it truly take advantage of Missouri's tie to the tangible.

Now once you have mastered your craft, whatever it may be, it is time to show it to the world. Revealing your talents to your family and friends would be good and all, but as our State proudly heralds, show me! And by me, I mean the state at large.

What do you do, then? At the many craft fairs and festivals held annually around Missouri, your crafts would be welcome. It's just a matter of a simple online search to find the schedules of these events so you know when and where to go. It is also advisable to contact the organizers beforehand, to know about booth packages and prices. You'll earn a bit, if you're lucky, but even if you don't, you'll receive priceless critique and praise for your pieces. - 16890
