New Poll Shows Wide Support For Health Care Reform Including The Public Option

By Edward Ronald Jacobson

The way that many politicians and most of the media talks about "the public option" you would think that it's favored by only a small portion of the populace. In reality that's not even close to true. Most Americans (of all political stripes) support the inclusion of the public option as a part of health care reform.

According to the most recent poll on the subject, 65% of Americans do support including the public option as a part of health care reform and only 26% are against it. And remember, about 26% of Americans still thought George W. Bush was doing a good job at the end of his Presidency, so that's not a whole lot. There are some people in this country just too clueless (see: "Teabaggers") to give any any consideration to and most of the opposition to the public option comes from those clueless people.

The depth of the support for the public option is clear from that 65% number but the width of the support becomes obvious as well when you look at the polling numbers broken down by political affiliation.

Among Democrats 81% support the public option while only 12% are against it. There are no breakdowns by region but I wouldn't be surprised if most of the 12% against it are pseudo Democrats who live in the south (ie: the type of "Democrats" who voted for John McCain.)

It's obvious that any politician who is against the public option is not doing so for any reasons other than political and/or monetary reasons. It's clear as day that the public option is good policy and is a necessary part of health care reform.

Independent voters don't support the public option as strongly as Democrats, but they still support it by more than a 2 to 1 margin (61% in favor and only 30% opposed.)

But perhaps most amazing are the numbers from Republican voters. Amazingly more Republicans are for the public option than against it! This is despite the way that Republican politicians have portrayed it in such a negative light (ie: they've lied about it time and time again.) 47% of Republicans support the public option against 42% who don't support it. The other 11% have no opinion.

For health care reform to be truly meaningful it must include the public option. This is truly a make or break thing. No public option means no health care reform. The American people want it. It will save us money. It will provide real competition. It will provide real choice. This is a no-brainer. A politician is either with the American people or they are with the health insurance industry. - 16890
