Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend

By Will Edwards

"By a heart made unspeakably sad by a grave on which the autumn leaves now fall, I know there are some things higher and grander and sublimer than money. " Russell H Conwell

Russell H Conwell's words, taken from his classic book Acres of Diamonds, clearly illustrate his attitude to money. Money, he says is a 'means', not an 'end'. And, as a means, it opens the door to very great possibilities.

Conwell was a Baptist preacher, and was often challenged to defend his position on the matter of wealth. So in his book, he deals with the oft misquoted Bible reference to the effect that 'money is the root of all evil'. This is, of course, not what the Bible actually says on the subject. As you no doubt know, the Bible says that the 'love of money is the root of all evil' " which is a different thing altogether.

His most famous work on the subject, Acres of Diamonds deals with opportunity and where it might be found. Using a number of apparently true and very interesting stories illustrating how people have missed opportunity, he suggests that becoming wealthy or not, as the case may be, may simply be a matter of recognising opportunities that lay before us.

The whole book is essentially a parable that illustrates how you may be surrounded by diamonds (literally) but be unable to recognise the fact. His powerful message was delivered to many different audiences over the years; and indeed, became his most popular lecture.

A classic motivational text, today, the book remains amazingly fresh and vital. A must-read for anyone looking to achieve real success in life, it is a very enjoyable book and perhaps one of the best self-improvement texts I have ever read. - 16890
