By Jeff Cline

Many of us go to a wedding or a birthday and have a few drinks. But then there is always that guy that has a few too many drinks. College students are known for binge drinking. For binge drinkers and excessive users they are putting their bodies and lives at risk.

The social and emotional damage alcohol can do can be dramatic. Alcohol is a depressant and often causes more problems for the abuser. Many people are killed each year from excessive use of alcohol. And the physical damage caused to your body can be irreversible.

The way that alcohol effects you depends on a few things. How much you weigh, what you had to eat , age and even sex. Alcohol gets into the bloodstream through your stomach and is absorbed by all your tissue. Including your vital organs.

Most drink because it puts them at ease in social situations. Moderate use can cause dizziness and make you less inhibited. While even low amounts can have this effect, excessive amounts can cause significant problems. Nausea, Vomiting , loss of balance and slurred speech can all be seen.

After a night out on the town and a few too many drinks you are likely to have a hangover. A hangover can keep you in bed all day with a headache, body aches and nausea. Not the way anybody wants to spend an afternoon.

There are some long term effects for prolonged alcohol abuse. Alcoholism can be a serious issue for abusers. Withdraws can cause hallucinations, convulsions, tremors and major anxiety. For these reasons an alcoholic may find it very hard to quit without medical help,

Prolonged alcoholism can have some major effects on your vital organs. The brain and liver are at risk for irreversible damage. For pregnant women the risk are much greater. It can cause damage such as mental retardation and abnormalities with what is called fetal alcohol syndrome.

Some people that are at risk for abusing, such as those already under emotional stress should not drink. By knowing the facts about drinking alcohol I hope you can make good decisions about consumption. Be aware if you are at risk. - 16890
