Principles to Beekeeping for Business or Hobby

By Calvin Wapasa

Some specific principles need to be known when you start a new honey bee keeping project either for business or as a hobby. These are the principles that will let you get the highest profit out of your bee project. The principles of how to raise honeybees are structured around the bees themselves.

1. Choosing suitable bees is a critical point for your project. You have to conduct thorough research on the different type of bees and the right type of bees good for your area. The easy way to do this is to ask the other beekeepers in your area. These beekeepers can tell you through their experience which type is right for you.

2. The hive is the place where you will put your bees and it is also the place where the honey will be formed. Choosing the hive depends on the type of bees, the place you live, the time you plan to spend on hive maintenance and the money you are willing to spend.

In general, the hive is made from specific types of wood like cedar wood and pine wood; both of these types have a distinct some smell, especially cedar wood which can impact the honey aroma. Choosing the hive type depends on your experience on how to raise honeybees, when starting out on beekeeping you may choose a hive that needs less maintenance even if it will cost them more.

3. Your hives location is very important; it should be in an open area but away from strong air drafts. It should be near green fields so the bees could find flowers to get the nectar. If the hives are located between plantations then you must make sure that the plant insecticides used in the area are safe for the bees. - 16890
